On July 8, 2025 Glitch project hosting and user profiles will be shut down. We have used glich in many ways to experiment with federated wiki and will need to migrate our things to other homes. post

Here we demonstrate using Glitch.com to host wiki for authors. Sadly, glitch project hosting shuts down on 2025-07-08.

The title of this page optimistically hopes we'll git this bug fixed before the end of the month. Something in glitch internals seems to be interacting badly with something in wiki's internals. I believe the problem is that wiki makes assumptions about where wiki-server package and wiki-client package live on disk and that pnpm installs packages according to different conventions. There are a lot of moving parts. Below the symptoms, see a drawing what I understand of the parts and their relationships.

The original wiki replaced 404 Not Found with an invitation to the Reader to contribute to the conversation. Federated wiki's help dialog hints an an invitation to the Reader to learn about writing wiki plugins. What if the dialog included a glitch remix button for a plugin development environment?

We collect here a few javascript libraries which build on top of the postMessage API to enable cross-origin communication. Be begin this journey with experiments to enable wiki integrations via the Frame Plugin. What we found along the way invite other design questions.

This app presents two views to the world. The first view is a mobile-friendly place for collecting bookmarks into a shared database. The second view is a federation outpost that presents those bookmarks as wiki pages which could be forked into the federation. app lineup glitch

We suggest a new workflow for collaborative research which consists of a gathering phase followed by reflection and then synthesis.

This javascript snippet and the installed turtle items are the results of an experiment with Outpost Thinking.

We seek to bring previous javascript experiments with turtle geometry to wiki. We are porting a turtle geometry editor from a previous jQuery-based implementation to a modern ES6 implementation. In our most recent branch we have a proof-of-concept that our editor can save geometry into the memory of a seran-wiki outpost where it can be included in a node-based wiki and forked into the wider federation.

The Journal Fork Survey finds a number of pages that were forked from wikis or wiki outposts hosted at glitch.me. For example: Incident Cognitive Costs apparently began life via the bookmark outpost

Enumerating many attempts to make wiki hosting easier. Reflecting on the many dead ends in this years-long random walk over possible solutions feels discouraging. Why is this so difficult?

An experience report from several years of living and learning with wiki. Before I learned of the federation, I was experimenting with turtle geometry in web browsers. I discovered a need for turtle authors to share drawings (which are also programs) & primitives (which are a lot like functions). Although, I have yet to bring my geometry experiments to wiki, the meandering journey of learning and exploring has been deeply rewarding.

One of the federated wiki core contributors. I study Ward's practices like I study aikido shihan. I watch closely how they work and then copy what I can see to gradually build skills of my own.

Inquiry into mechanisms to enable authors to edit without having to also manage a server. Speculation to connect dots between node wiki, dat wiki, glitch wiki, wiki outposts. Cinema projects static images in rapid succession to a screen—exploiting human perception to construct an illusion of motion from the frame rate. So a simple file server could project a "read-only" interactive hypermedia and authors could create the illusion of write access by external transport mechanisms. Alternate titles: Illusion of Stillness, Static Wiki, "Serverless" Wiki, Wik

Excited and inspired by this collaboration with Ward Cunningham. Here we share a branching story of branching graphs in hopes of revealing federated wiki as a surprisingly powerful medium for learning.

Ward included Graphviz in a short list of tools he has reached for over and over. We found particular inspiration from two examples: El Dorado and Exploratory Parsing.
