Open Data and Supply Chains

Wiki was founded with an eye towards sustainability of global manufacturing. We continue to bump into organizations with similar goals.

OpenCorporates is the world's largest open database of companies, with data on over 137 million companies in 125 jurisdictions. We're doing some work looking at supply chains in a data-centric way, and I know you've had some experience in this field. I was wondering if you had any useful resources or advice you could send our way? wikipedia site

Dara O’Rourke’ work is admirable and his Science article represents it with appropriate distance. You may find this comment useful. science .

I became aware of O’Rourke during my one year as a Nike fellow. Since then Michael and I have been working towards related goals, myself in the technology and Michael more so in the world. sustasis

Meet the C&A Foundation which has one focus on building sustainable supply chains in the fashion industry, particularly focusing on sustainable cotton, workers conditions, eradicating forced labour, and engaging more broadly with communities making up supply chains. site

I have browsed the C&A Foundation’s web pages and have a vague notion of what you do. I also notice that you have some relationship with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Material Sustainability Index with roots at Nike. page

The Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) provides access to a large amount of relevant information about the impacts of material production used in the apparel, footwear, and home textile industries. page page

The original version of the Higg MSI was developed by Nike and later adopted by the SAC in 2012 and incorporated into the SAC’s Higg Index. Since then, SAC has updated the methodology, technology, and datasets to create an unparalleled tool for evaluating the environmental impacts produced by materials from extraction through manufacturing. post

Federated Wiki sites cluster around people who share tacit knowledge and speak the same language.

I worked with that data as it was donated to SAC. I was asked how a brand like Nike could participate in an open exchange of data without having other people’s data misattributed to them. I suggested the “federated” model and then realized it in a “data wiki” that captured accurately the whole of MSI with workflows for extending and reviewing a sequence of releases.

At the end of my year with Nike I described this work in most general terms at a TEDx presentation with a demonstration based on Ecotrust’s Reliable Prosperity Index also migrated into federated wiki. video

Ecotrust's index was organized as a series of patterns offering workable solutions recognized within the work of the foundation. See Reliable Prosperity Index
